Kefalonia
Kefalonia
Kefalonia is the largest island of the Ionian archipelago. An island full of contradictions, which give it its own beauty. The rich and fertile Kefalonia is known for its red and white wine, the Robola, its honey and white cheese type Myrzithra. A versatile and green holiday destination in Greece with picturesque harbor towns such as Assos and Fiskardo.
The beaches of Myrtos, Petani and Antisamos are among the most beautiful in Kefalonia and even in Greece.
The island is also called Kefallinia and Cephalonia and has many paradoxes.
In Katavothres, thousands of liters of sea water flow continuously through a crack in the earth every day and simply disappear. After years of research, it has been found that this water passes through the island underground and comes to the surface again in Lake Melissani.
The Enos mountain with a peak of 1,628 meters is the highest point of Kefalonia and therefore also of all the Ionian islands. The area on and around this mountain has many pine trees and is also a National Park. Among other things, the unique pine species Abies Cephalonia grows here.
The Kokkini Rachi mountain range along the east coast has a peak of 1,081 meters and the Agia Dinami mountain with a height of 1,129 meters is the second highest point on the island.
In 2001, Kefalonia was the film location for the beautiful war film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin with Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz in the lead roles. The film was largely shot in and around the towns of Sami and Agia Efimia and on the beaches of Antisamos and Myrtos.
