The Ionian Islands
The Ionian Islands
This island group lies to the West of the Greek mainland. These islands are much greener and less densely populated than the others Greek islands and have a hospitable population, lush nature, forested mountains, varied landscapes and wonderful long (sandy) beaches with a clear blue sea. With the colors of sand and sea, you sometimes imagine yourself in the Caribbean.
These islands were ruled by the Venetian republic for a long time, this is also clearly visible in the architecture of some islands. The Ionian cuisine also has undeniable Venetian / Italian influences. Yet these islands have always managed to retain their Greek character.
The most well-known Ionian islands are Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxi and Kythira.
