Nisyros
Nisyros
Nisyros is a small, volcanic island, between Kos and Tilos. In ancient times it was known as Porphyris. In Mythology it appears that the island was united with Leros and when Posseidon chased the giant Polyvotis, he split the two islands apart.
The capital and port of Nisyros is Mandraki, in the northwest at the foot of a steep hill. Nisyros is 41 square kilometers in size and the total length of the coastline is 28 kilometers.
Mandraki, the capital but also the port of Nisyros, is more a big village than a small town. What is striking here are the white houses with the flat roofs. Above Mandraki, the high rock with the castle of Spiliani that was previously owned by the Ioannite Knights protrudes.
Due to the volcano, there are also various hot springs on Nisyros. They have a healing effect, the source of which was used at Pali (Poles) in the time of Hippokrates. Loutra is a stone’s throw from Mandraki and these hot springs have been exploited since 1872. The water from the sources in Loutra will be a maximum of 46 degrees. At Avlaki in the south of Nisyros you will find a third natural source. This is partly in the sea and here the temperature can rise to more than 60 degrees.
